A Côtes du Rhône Red Excellent with a Lovely Warming German Beef Stew

We had one of our old favourites from Supercook – Bauernsuppe, which is a German Peasant Soup.  It is a lovely rustic stewed beef recipe and we tried a bottle of Plan de Dieu Côtes du Rhône Villages 2009 from Costco.  This is a red blend from Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre and we are finding Southern French Reds work well with medium weight dishes without intensely flavoured sauces.  This match was excellent and brought out the savoury flavours in the wine very well.  Ripe and smooth, with black fruits and a hint of spiciness.  Even though the wine was 14% alcohol it was still medium bodied.
