We finished of the remainder of the Sri Lankan Red Beef Curry from the previous evening and ended up switching to a red wine rather than the intended Riesling. (see 12th October). We wanted a wine that could cope with savoury beef flavours, spices and the underlying sweetness from the coconut milk. We have found some Merlots have worked well in the past with sweet and savoury flavour combinations. We opened a bottle of Isla Negra Merlot Reserva 2010 from Tesco. The wine had plenty of red fruit – cherries and plums – and a juicy sweetness that went very well with the curry. Arguably an even better match than the white we tried last time.
