We tried Rachel Khoo’s Boeuf Bourguignon with Baguette Dumplings from the BBC Food website. This is a very rich hearty recipe with sprigs of fresh thyme, rosemary, parsley and chestnut mushrooms.
We wanted an equally powerful wine to match and opened a bottle of Quinta Espirito Santo 2008, a Portuguese red from the Sunday Times Wine Club that we last successfully tried with an equally rich beef stew on 8th Jan 2012. This is a rich, full-bodied blend of Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo) and Castelao.
We tasted an initial sweetness with spicy dark chocolate, peppery flavours of plums and black cherries lingering on the smooth finish. This was a superb match with this meal.
